I see that some people on the DWF are moaning that Matt is too young for the role. I disagree. Already just in that brief interview he displayed the charisma and style needed for the role.
David Tennant and Steve Moffat note that the new Doctor's (apparent) youth will be a big part of his story arc. Like the Fifth Doctor, Smith's incarnation is not the one that the Doctor himself would want to end up resembling. It's all down to those ten years he gave up in ROTC...

I must admit that I'm very surprised that it wasn't. Paterson must be gutted. Maybe they were going to offer it to him but made a last minute alternate decision after seeing Matt's audition.
